Manchester United defender Phil Jones hails Nemanja Vidic's influence

The Serbian helped the Red Devils keep a clean sheet against Everton at Goodison Park as he returned to the side after being left out of the team to play Manchester City

Phil Jones has praised Nemanja Vidic after the Serbian marked his return to the starting line-up by helping Manchester United to a clean sheet and three points against Everton.

Jones featured at right-back as the champions produced an impressive defensive performance to hold on at Goodison Park and deny their hosts a point despite late pressure.

He told MUTV: "He is our captain and you don't want to go without your captain.

"The determination and greatness shows and it rubs off on everyone else."

The 19-year-old also hailed his team's spirit after the 1-0 win against the Toffees, insisting that every player aided the defensive effort under pressure.

He continued: "We fought defensively as a unit. We have 11 players when we defend, not just four.

"I thought 11 players defended terrifically well when Everton were throwing everything, the kitchen sink, at us at the end.

"I thought we stood strong as a unit and held together."
